Ironically, Sheamus’ car sped down that same road, roaring past the infected man as well as Alissons car, sirens screaming the entire time as he picked up the pace, reports coming in that the rioters were getting more and more restless and violent. He thought he heard the dispatcher say that they were actually killing the crows, squirrels and other small animals they could get their hands on, and, more disturbingly, he thought he heard them say they were eating them. The Deputy shuddered at the thought. There really were some messed up people in the world, weren’t there?
When he arrived to Main Street, the scene was utter chaos. Officers were directing civilians away from the turmoil, telling them to get in their cars and leave, and if they couldn’t to get inside and stay there.
“Sheamus!” A male voice called out; a dark haired, heavy set man waved him over. It was his friend from the academy, Charles Burke. The two grew close over the course of their training and did the best he could to distract his friend from his troubles.
“Charlie, what the fuck is going on? The dispatcher said they were EATING animals!” Sheamus called out as he hurried over to his friend.
“Sheamus, my boy, you have no fucking idea.” He said grimly. Off in the distance, they could see plumes of smoke from tear gas bombs meant to disorient the crowds. “Tear gas isn’t doing a damn thing. Not a god damned fucking thing.”
“Seriously? What are they, on some sort of drug?” He asked, looking out at the crowd of rioters, beating their fists angrily on the hard, fiberglass shields of the Riot Police.
“Who knows. Right now, we’re getting people out of here. Give me a hand, would you?”
“Right!” Sheamus nodded as they rushed over to help the evacuated citizens, directing them to take the country roads and keep driving, to stay out of the city until further notice. Just as Sheamus helped an elderly woman into her car, watching her drive off, he heard something that made his blood run cold; a bloodcurdling human scream. He whirled around, looking to see a man grabbed by the hands of the rioting crowd, screaming as he was dragged into the fray and…..torn apart by the crowd.
“Sheamus! Do you see that?!” Burke yelled. He only nodded as the officers opened fire on the bloodthirsty crowd, foolishly letting their guard drop.
She quickly made her way to the police, keeping her eyes open for the mysteriously common sick-looking people wandering the streets and feeling a bit relieved when she finally spotted the police station. She parked nearby, checking the area for wanderers before exiting her car and making her way into the station, her curiosity and worry peaking at the few officers running out of the building and speeding away.
Soon after making it inside, she spotted one of Sheamus’s friends from the academy, feeling slightly comforted at seeing the familiar, if not panicked, face. “Frank, what’s going on?”
‘Ali! Thank god you’re alright… I bet that Parker’s been worried about you with all this chaos… Did he send you here?’
“Frank, what are you talking about? What the hell is going on out there? I had some sick-looking, deranged man run up to my car and start banging on the windows, not to mention the numerous others that I saw on my way here…”
“Someone came at you?” He continued on without an answer, leading her a bit further inside the building as more cops rushed out. “There’s been some sort of outbreak… and there’s a riot going on downtown with these… sick people… It’s not good, Ali. It’s getting out of hand fast and we’re just trying to get the majority of the citizen’s evacuated…”
“Is- …Is Shea there?” He nodded grimly, her heart catching in her chest as a wave of panic, bigger than what she had experienced on the way over, rushed over her. He- …was out there…
Not for the first, and hopefully not for the last, she cursed Sheamus Parker ever joining the police force… Even if she couldn’t be with him… she didn’t want him getting hurt, and with what was going on out there, it seemed like a real possibility…
The scene downtown was pure chaos. The rioters had completely lost their minds, the horde scattering through the streets faster than the police and SWAT teams could control them. They seemed to attack indiscriminately, and the poor souls who got in the way were torn to pieces within seconds. It was all Sheamus could do to get himself and any other surviving citizens out of there.
His radio was going crazy, reports all over town of these attacks were flooding in, as well as responses from the control center.
“This is Deputy Sheamus Parker, anyone, come in!” He barked into the radio, getting static and garbled responses, “The rioters have begun to attack and kill citizens and officers, we have no choice but to open fire and use deadly force, over!”
“Sheamus, forget about it!” Charles snapped, his weapon already drawn and aimed at the horde. “Forget about orders right now, if we don’t do something we’ll both die!”
“But…” Sheamus was about to say, but was cut off by the sudden discharge of his friends gun; he always was one hell of a shot with a pistol.
“Listen, your life, my life, and the lives of every person here is threatened by these insane bastards. It’s our job to protect the innocent by any means necessary.” Charles said, his words burning into his friends mind. “Come on, we gotta get the fuck out of here!”
With a nod, he ran beside his friend, directing anyone who was still sane inside, several people had already begun boarding up doors and windows, or blocking them with furniture or displays. The pair split up, each heading to their cars. As Sheamus was about to open the door, he was confronted by one of them; a man with paled skin, blood on his face and a very nasty looking bite taken from his neck. He seemed to snarl at the deputy. There was almost no time to react as he rushed forward, almost screaming as he raced to his next meal. Training took over, and with two shots the walking corpse fell to the ground with a thump, unmoving.
Quickly, he threw the door open, getting inside, turning the key in the ignition and slamming it into gear, whipping it around and heading directly towards the Police Station.
